Being a Cinematographer

Cinematography is essentially a form of art where instead of using various mediums such as watercolor or oil pastel, you are using a camera. The art of cinematography is not only in just the movement of the camera but the creation of the scene as a painting in each frame.

The quality of color, the decision of film or digital, the angle and positioning of the camera, the movement and shifting of position of the camera, the intention and the emotion of the said frames and the way it is used to display a story visually.

The cinematographer works hand-in-hand with the director, creating out the painting that is being dictated by the director. They are the holder of the pen and the director has that vision or that story in their mind that the cinematographer would then have to draw.

It is the job of the cinematographer to project that story and that vision through the technical form. This job involves the purpose of lighting and the intention of the camera placement in order to provoke a thought, an emotion, an idea that is trying to be conveyed by the scene.

They are simply making use of every little detail within the shot.
