Movie Review: La La Land (2016)

Ref: La La Land

First off let me start out and say that this movie was unlike all other movies that I've ever seen in my life. I absolutely loved this movie and recommend everyone to go and see it.

Moving on, here are some points on why I loved it, SPOILER ALERT. If you're gonna watch the movie/plan on watching it, don't read this lol.

For the technical aspect of the film, I LOVED the cinematography. The camera movements were really really compelling and I found that the film did a nice job in their one-take shots (the entire beginning of the film was incredible). I felt like I was in a vast theatre or something, it felt pretty real and in-person to me. There were so many gorgeous shots within the film itself, I remember wishing that I could screencap a bunch of them. The vivid colors and the use of attire really did a good job in displaying the dream-like atmosphere of the film. You are constantly reminded of it being a dream-space, it's incredible. I was literally in awe with how planned out each location was and you can really spot the added detail that helped to build up the film and add meaning to it (in other movies, some of these details aren't as relevant or help only a tad bit and yet in this one EVERYTHING seemed to matter).

My favorite thing about the film were the musical transitions (i'll call them that) from one point to the next, instead of telling the audience through dialogue what is going on there's a lot of showing going on. I felt that it really helped the audience to engage with the film a little bit, where we are not so much spoon-fed the information but are a kind of forced to interpret it for ourselves (and in many occasions it did this, which I found to be pretty incredible). Gosling really did it for me. As soon as his character was introduced, I knew I'd love it. Not only because of him, but the way his character was brought up and built... there's something about that, I was really sold on it (but of course lol). That true-love romance concept between the characters was lovely too. I just loved the fact that he loved her and he wanted to be there for her, to support her dream, to be the guy that she wanted, he really threw himself apart for her and that genuine love... that absolutely pure love really had me falling apart in the end because he really loved her... Despite having to change aspects of himself for her and dealing with doing a job that he didn't like and all of that just for her... ugh my heart really hurt.

The soundtracks were amazing, as you guys may or may not know my favorite track was City of Stars, moreover because it goings into this concept of "genuine love" but it also touches on the concept of wanting to follow your dreams (I'm gonna go into that concept in a little bit). I think this track really tells a lot about the relationship that was built between the two characters. They're not completely different, actually they're chasing really nearly the same thing: true love/ a love at first sight type of encounter (which I'm quite the sucker for if I have to speak honestly on it).

One more thing, I loved how the film played with the concept of "What Could Have Been", where they played out the entire series of events that could have happened and SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED if a few details were changed or done differently (which on its own could be a good idea for other film ideas: "the sensitive life that we live" or "the world that is constantly changing itself after every little action you make"). The concept that if you did even just one tiny thing differently, your life could be completely different.

And now this isn't a complaint but more of a statement, I felt like this concept was a bit blurry at first because I did question the sudden switch of events at some points, but it all becomes clear at the end so I felt like this was intentional. This didn't throw me off though, I became more intrigued with it actually. So anyways, in conclusion it was a really good film, if you have the chance I think you should definitely watch it. I'd love to watch it again one day just because it was so beautiful and yet so heartbreaking ugh, I will never get over it.

RE: HOLD ON WAIT, I'M LISTENING TO AUDITION AGAIN AND I FOUND OUT WHAT I WANTED TO SAY. I loved how the film continued to promote this motivation of following one's dreams and never giving up. You'll be able to catch your dreams if you never ever ever ever EVER give up. There's this continuous reminder that you should never give up on yourself, despite the hardships and the heartbreak and the sadness, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel.
