Movie Review: Waffle Street [Netflix]

Movie Opinion: Waffle Street (2015)

This movie was said to be based off of a true story, with provided photographs of the real people (nearing the end of the film). For the record, I watched this movie only because I found James Lafferty to be extremely handsome. There were so many things that this movie could’ve worked on as far as the technical department goes and because honestly there’s just so much you can really do with a “based on a true story” plot.

The acting was not terrible but was not great either. I felt like the chemistry between Jimmy and Becky was off as a pair and felt that there could’ve been a lot of work done making their love a bit more realistic. Acting involves a lot of subtle, underlining, and even personal feeling when it comes to making things more realistic as far as love goes. Now the actors weren’t bad, but there were times where the extras threw me off with either the way they said their lines or possibly even how they “felt their lines”. As an audience you catch a lot of things that are off and there were many times that I felt like the acting was off.

For the most part, the film seems or feels pretty indie where the quality of it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t special either. It felt like an extended school project for a film class that had a bit better funding than students normally would get for their films (with the benefits of location, attire, actors, etc etc etc). Though that sounds terribly sarcastic and plain out disrespectful (being a film student myself), I found it to be pretty typical as far as technicalities go.

The film focused more on spreading morals which isn’t a really bad thing because what they did promote had great merit. The main theme of this film includes(and I paraphrase): being genuine and working hard for what you want. Basically Jim worked hard and wanted to be genuine, honest and purely humanitarian so in the end his life worked out for him. Of course this isn’t a realistic thing and they had to definitely omit a lot of negativity that life throws out at people, but for the sake of the review I will say that they did a great job at promoting this universal theme. People should definitely be genuine and honest and work hard for what they want (even as potentially problematic as it sounds).

Rating: 6/10

I didn’t have a hard time watching the movie. It had very bleak humor and the acting was terrible but James Lafferty provided a good amount of eyecandy for me to tolerate it. It was pretty cliche as far as movies with morals go but I didn’t find that to be a bad thing. There could’ve been more work on originality and cinematography but I feel like the intention of this film was not to sprout out inspiration and wow us with their videography skills but more on teaching the lesson of hard work pays off at the end of the day. So in reference to their intention of this piece, I say the film fulfilled its duty in this world.
