Poem: View of Happiness

The View of Happiness

I know you want to look through that window,
The one with the Happy People,
The people without pain,
Without suffering,
Without sadness.
What lucky individuals they must be,
And oh what a shame,
How unfortunate it is
To be Me.
To be Us.
….
What should I do to be as happy -as eternally happy
As They are?
What should I do?
What should We do?
To be like those Happy People.
Wouldn’t you also want to be as happy as they are?
With their huge smiles and their carefree eyes,
Surely they’ve never experienced a wink of sadness in their lives,
That can’t possibly be.
They don’t know what it’s like to feel sad.
They don’t understand how it is to be Us,
With their wealth and their riches,
With their money and their power,
With all of their hearts desire
...
There is no way people like that would be unhappy,
There’s no way
No way...
that they…
would be
Unhappy.
But what if -just what if...
They aren’t as happy as we thought they were?
Like a play, like a stage,
they are pretending
Fabricating personas
And forcing smiles upon their faces…
What if they aren’t as happy as we take them to be?
What if they are as broken as we are,
And as lost
And as scared
And as tired
As We are?
And what if there is no such thing as eternal happiness?
And no such thing as perfection?

Everyone is broken in someway,
Shape or form,
Big or small;
Our glasses are always chipped
or cracked
or fractured,
But it’s okay
Because there will always be fixes,
There will always be ways to mend these injuries,
to bandage these wounds,
to restore your happiness.
Sometimes it rains and it’s cold,
And our days don’t go as planned,
But the sun will come out,
And we’ll feel its warmth,
It’s love,
It’s kindness,
And it will be then that
We will be able to smile
just as the Happy People do.
